Fredonia Fire Department |
Prior to the fall of 1923 the Village of Fredonia received
its fire protection from the Waubeka Fire Department. On September 23, 1923, the
Fredonia Village Board appointed Frank J. Meyer as the first Fire Chief, and
borrowed $3500.00 for a new Luverene 350 gpm fire engine. On December 7, 1923 a
group of 27 men residing in the Village of Fredonia met at the bank to discuss
the organization of a fire department for the Village of Fredonia. Fire Chief
Frank J. Meyer appointed Peter Jung, E.P. Neuens, and Rollin Parks to draft a
constitution and a set of By Laws.
On December 12, 1923 Chief Frank J. Meyer called the
meeting to order where the proposed Constitution and By Laws were read, and
adopted by those present. Charter members taking the oath of office that night
were: Frank J. Meyer, Herbert W. Witt, Theodore Eisentraut, Emil Neuens, Leo
Hiltgen, John J. Meyer, Mike Gilson, Peter J. Jung, Rollin R. Parks, Harold
Janke, Leo Paulus, Walter Klumb, Alois Lesch, Ed P. Neuens, Robert Hetzel,

On May 27, 1923, the Village Board of Fredonia authorized the
construction of two 36,000 gallon cisterns. One was located at St. Rose Catholic
Church on the east side of town, and the other on the west side of town at St.
Johns Lutheran Church. Stoney Creek, which bisects the Village, would be the
water source for the downtown area.
On June 20, 1926 the new Village Hall and Firehouse were
officially dedicated. Construction cost was $7445.00. The building houses the
Fredonia Marshalls Office today.
The first account of tax money being used to support the Fire
Department came in November of 1937, when the Village Board added $200.00 to the
budget for maintenance of the Fire Department. Up to that point an annual dance
supported the Fire Department.
In August of 1947 a second pumper was purchased. An
International/Pirsch 500 gpm truck with a 400 gallon tank was put in service at
a cost of $6870.
A used home dairy delivery truck was purchased for $300, and
used for a Rescue/Equipment truck in 1955. In January of 1958 a new fire
telephone system was put into operation. Phones would now ring simultaneously at
businesses and homes of members in the village when a person called to report a
fire.
Plans for a new fire station on South Milwaukee Street were
completed in 1961. The building would be 66 x 44, with four bays and an
office. The total cost was $34,167, and occupancy took place in June of 1962.

2000 gallon tank, at a cost of $550. This was the Departments first water

In February of 1969, the Fredonia Fire Department along with
the other eight Fire Departments in Ozaukee County, formed the Association of
Ozaukee County Fire Departments. A mutual-aid contract was signed by all nine
Departments, eliminating fees charged for responding to a neighboring
Departments fire.
On March 4, 1971, the Desota Chemical plant, located on
Wheeler Avenue burned to the ground, with losses exceeding $500,000. In March of
1972 a used 3000 gallon tanker truck was purchased.
On December 14, 1976, the use of pagers for alerting
members of fire calls was begun.
June of 1978, saw a new 3900 square foot addition to the
firehouse, and the purchase of a 50 Pierce Telesquirt. It also marked the
retirement of Chief Paul Meyer, who to this date has had the longest tenure as
Chief, 25 years.
In September of 1978, an Army Surplus Jeep was purchased and
equipped for fighting grass fires. On October 5, 1978, fire destroyed the Kenro
Corp. on Wheeler Avenue. The Department was on scene for 36 hours, total damage
was $750,000.
In 1986, the Fredonia and Waubeka Fire Departments signed a
Simulcast agreement. This would have both Departments paged together for
structure fires. This agreement still is in place today. In August of 1987, a
new Heavy Rescue truck was purchased for $64,000, and a new Tanker was purchased
for $74,000. The Jeep was replaced with a Ford F-350 4X4 in 1993. In 1995, the
John Bean was replaced with a Pirece/Dash 1500 gpm
pumper at a cost of 223,000.
!998 saw the 75th Anniversary of the Fredonia
Fire Department, and the purchase of a new Pierce/65 Telesquirt. In 2002, the
Northern Ozaukee Ambulance merged with the Fire Department, as a move to assist
with dwindling personnel. In 2005, two Fire Department members suffered barn
fires, Rick Lanser in April, and Andy Paulus in August. December of 2005 saw the
addition of a Pierce Rescue Pumper to the fleet.
The Department currently has 40 members providing Fire,
