Fredonia Fire Department

 

Prior to the fall of 1923 the Village of Fredonia received its fire protection from the Waubeka Fire Department. On September 23, 1923, the Fredonia Village Board appointed Frank J. Meyer as the first Fire Chief, and borrowed $3500.00 for a new Luverene 350 gpm fire engine. On December 7, 1923 a group of 27 men residing in the Village of Fredonia met at the bank to discuss the organization of a fire department for the Village of Fredonia. Fire Chief Frank J. Meyer appointed Peter Jung, E.P. Neuens, and Rollin Parks to draft a constitution and a set of By Laws.

On December 12, 1923 Chief Frank J. Meyer called the meeting to order where the proposed Constitution and By Laws were read, and adopted by those present. Charter members taking the oath of office that night were: Frank J. Meyer, Herbert W. Witt, Theodore Eisentraut, Emil Neuens, Leo Hiltgen, John J. Meyer, Mike Gilson, Peter J. Jung, Rollin R. Parks, Harold Janke, Leo Paulus, Walter Klumb, Alois Lesch, Ed P. Neuens, Robert Hetzel, Herbert Wenzel, William J. Neuens, Peter Pierron, Joseph Klein,  Art Lauters, Peter Watry, and Ernest Eisentraut.

On May 27, 1923, the Village Board of Fredonia authorized the construction of two 36,000 gallon cisterns. One was located at St. Rose Catholic Church on the east side of town, and the other on the west side of town at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Stoney Creek, which bisects the Village, would be the water source for the downtown area.

On June 20, 1926 the new Village Hall and Firehouse were officially dedicated. Construction cost was $7445.00. The building houses the Fredonia Marshall’s Office today.

The first account of tax money being used to support the Fire Department came in November of 1937, when the Village Board added $200.00 to the budget for maintenance of the Fire Department. Up to that point an annual dance supported the Fire Department.

In August of 1947 a second pumper was purchased. An International/Pirsch 500 gpm truck with a 400 gallon tank was put in service at a cost of $6870.

A used home dairy delivery truck was purchased for $300, and used for a Rescue/Equipment truck in 1955. In January of 1958 a new fire telephone system was put into operation. Phones would now ring simultaneously at businesses and homes of members in the village when a person called to report a fire.

Plans for a new fire station on South Milwaukee Street were completed in 1961. The building would be 66’ x 44’, with four bays and an office. The total cost was $34,167, and occupancy took place in June of 1962.

A new John Bean 750 gpm pumper was purchased for $16,000 in 1964. In 1965, a used Highway Department truck was purchased and equipped with a 2000 gallon tank, at a cost of $550. This was the Departments first water tanker. !n 1967, a new Rescue/Utility truck was purchased for $8100.

In February of 1969, the Fredonia Fire Department along with the other eight Fire Departments in Ozaukee County, formed the Association of Ozaukee County Fire Departments. A mutual-aid contract was signed by all nine Departments, eliminating fees charged for responding to a neighboring Departments fire.

On March 4, 1971, the Desota Chemical plant, located on Wheeler Avenue burned to the ground, with losses exceeding $500,000. In March of 1972 a used 3000 gallon tanker truck was purchased.  On December 14, 1976, the use of pagers for alerting members of fire calls was begun.

June of 1978, saw a new 3900 square foot addition to the firehouse, and the purchase of a 50’ Pierce Telesquirt. It also marked the retirement of Chief Paul Meyer, who to this date has had the longest tenure as Chief, 25 years.

In September of 1978, an Army Surplus Jeep was purchased and equipped for fighting grass fires. On October 5, 1978, fire destroyed the Kenro Corp. on Wheeler Avenue. The Department was on scene for 36 hours, total damage was $750,000.

In 1986, the Fredonia and Waubeka Fire Departments signed a Simulcast agreement. This would have both Departments paged together for structure fires. This agreement still is in place today. In August of 1987, a new Heavy Rescue truck was purchased for $64,000, and a new Tanker was purchased for $74,000. The Jeep was replaced with a Ford F-350 4X4 in 1993. In 1995, the John Bean was replaced with a Pirece/Dash 1500 gpm  pumper at a cost of 223,000.

!998 saw the 75th Anniversary of the Fredonia Fire Department, and the purchase of a new Pierce/65’ Telesquirt. In 2002, the Northern Ozaukee Ambulance merged with the Fire Department, as a move to assist with dwindling personnel. In 2005, two Fire Department members suffered barn fires, Rick Lanser in April, and Andy Paulus in August. December of 2005 saw the addition of a Pierce Rescue Pumper to the fleet.

The Department currently has 40 members providing Fire, Rescue, and EMT-I service to the village of Fredonia, and parts of the Towns of Fredonia, and Saukville. Ambulance service is also provided to the Village of Belgium and a portion of the Town of Belgium.
